Why WAR?

Time to get these forums rolling.
First up: What attracted you to WAR in the first place?
I am curious as to what got you interested in WAR in the first place. For me it was Mythic talking about RvR and the Greenskins. I had heard and seen some of the Warhammer Online project before Mythic took over but it just didn't interest me. I was playing WoW at the time and the reason I bought it in the first place was the chance to be an Orc. I've been an Orc fan since reading the Hobbit oh so many years and years ago. However, because of my limited game time, endgame PvE raiding was never an option for me. This along with my enjoyment of online shooters attracted me to WoW's PvP. While it was fun for a while WoW's PvP shortcomings were pretty obvious right from the start. The chance to be an Orc and PvP in a game designed with it in mind from the start clinched it for me.
What about you?

My interest was originally to follow any successor that Mythic made to the popular DAoC. I played many years on the Merlin server before switching to Everquest 2 for several years, then Vanguard. I was following Impereator until I realized that game wasn't going anywhere fast although interesting concepts. The real deal that sealed the fate of this game for me was that they are bring back RvR and the game was similar to an MMO being created by Codemasters about 5-6 years called Dragon Empires. Dragon Empires eventually shut its doors due to believe it or not a massive design flaw, not money or lack of fans, and it would have required them an extra year or two to completely recode the game (bummer).
Im also in my prime to look for a new game to play and something that may also shake off some of WoW's numbers. Age of Conan is gaining pace though by for whatever reasons the only roman type games I can play are Rome:Total War or Age of Empires. A MMO Roman game does not fit my fancy.
I never played Warhammer 40k so all this lore for me is fantastic and a bit overwhelming at times

You see this is one of the reasons why we have all the bases covered between Svoald and myself. He is coming to the WAR arena from a background of being interested in the past accomplishements of the Team behind the game, IE Mythic.
whereas I am coming to WAR from the direction of thinking that the Warhammer universe is one of the best settings ever created and probably is only second to the Forgotten realms in terms of depth of that setting. I am one of the biggest fans you will ever find of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay I thought that just happend to be one of the best P&P systems ever created.
So yeah between Svoald and myself we have both the chalk and cheese covered... just need to figure out which is which now LOL

I would agree with Orlock, War Hammer has one of the best most intensive universes for gaming in. I played the p&p version and loved it. I read the books. I just think its the best mess of gaming and high (low) fantasy setting out there. This not for the faint of heart, its dirty, its gritty, and loads of fun. It also has tons of expansion capability (longevity). They have tons of new things they could introduce that is already in the universe with out "faking" it.
That is why.. plus;
Orks Rule, Humans Drool.

I cme to WAR fom Rogue Trader back in the day and I played the TT in both Warhammer and Warhammer 40k.
The GW world for Fantasy is very deep and cool. There is so much fluff to go with that there will be stuff for expansions for a long time. I also played DAoC and love the way Mythic does RvR. Its the best I have seen and so that also attracted me to WAR.
So you can see that WAR is the joining of 2 loves Games Workshop games and Mythic games.

My first contact with the Warhammer Fantasy universe was the RTS game called Dark Omen. That game made me look deeper into the Warhammer hobby and from there I started to collect diverse armies from it. I also played some Warhammer Fantasy RPG for a while, but not much. Another thing that totally got me into WAR was RvR which stems from the allmighty God of PvP named DAoC. Since Mythic paused development on Imperator and bought the Warhammer IP from Games Workshop I was instantly hooked on WAR.

Mythic is making another RvR based game. It is Warhammer. Paul Barnett. This is what attracted me after I did some research on it.

I find it interesting that only a few have replied here. This could be a very good chat. I also, find it interesting that I am really the only one that find the allure of diry, gritty, and bloodly fantasy a major attraction. Honestly, I could give two dead Skavens about who is making the game. I really don't even care about the RvR aspect. Although, the universe does lend itself excedingly well to RvR without any forced story line or manipulation. All and I do mean all, I want is a good game.
I want a game that I can get gritty in. I want a game that can carry me away ( I have a fat bum so it better be good
) while I play. I have had my imagination via the p&p game and books (see my Black library thread) develop a whole nasty, bad, and screwed up world. The WAR game better deliver. Now all that said, it will not compare to what I have built up in my head. I know this, but it does have to provide the grit, rough, and tumble aspect. My imagaination will fill in from there.
Playability from my imagination will take over to a certain point and allow a great deal of latitude on design. However, it has to be playable. I am not just talking interface. I'll leave that to Orlock ( I believe he made the thread on interface ).
In closing, its the world of War Hammer that has drawn me here. Hands down I think whomever made this attempt, I was destined to try it.

Gritty and dirty is part of the depth I find in Warhammer and Warhammer 40k universes. There is alot of color there...much of it dark.....vibrant...evil colors...and thats ust Chaos
In both genres of Warhammer the is nothing but war left. Thats what makes it cool. Plus anywhere where one of my fave armies biggest weapon is the power of Grudges (revenge) or where there is a race of green darkly silly fungi (orcs and gobbos) that have death gliders...and many more cool things like that...thats where I want to be

I was attracted to WAR after playing wow for a couple of years, its linear based gear and constant grinds eventually made me end my subscription. I was always interested in PVP in wow and I loved the day long AVs when they first came out. I was pulled in by WARs promises of great PVP and huge battles. Keep sieges and City sieges also seemed awesome to me. I then joined WHA and found out more and more about it and i've been hooked ever since.

I've always been a fan of Warhammer. I collect the Vampire Counts in the table top game. I was initially interested in the previous Warhammer Online game that was developing but got scrapped.

Im just finally glad theres going to be a decent competitor for WoW, and also after watching the podcast, screen shots and vids it certainly has made an impact on me. Im a very pvp person myself so the thought of actually taking over the enemies capital appeals to me very much so. Err plus i play the tabletop and have prayed for this day since i realized a game like WoW could be made.

I was listening to Taverncast and one of the hosts discussed how WAR was released and it was kind if similar to WoW. They then went on to talk breifly about how the Public Quests were kind of cool. I go toff work that night and ran out and bought WAR. Then to my dismay I found out my PC wouldn't play it so I went to upgrade it. To my further dismay I found out my PC couldn't be upgraded and it was only 2 years old. So thus because of WAR I bought a new PC. So I now feel I am committed to WAR to the toon of almost $600...lol.... now I have to enjoy it. That or smash my new computer. '
